Sun ‘n Fun 51 Airshow Hotter than Ever

Lakeland, FL – April 1, 2025 – The skies above Lakeland Linder International Airport roared to life today as the 51st Annual Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo kicked off, marking the start of “Aviation’s Season Opener.” Running from April 1 to April 6, this week-long celebration of flight promises a thrilling lineup of airshow performers, a bustling vendor scene, and a host of family-friendly activities—all under the blazing Florida sun. With temperatures expected to climb into the high 80s and low 90s, attendees are gearing up for both high-flying action and the challenge of staying cool and safe.

A Star-Studded Airshow Lineup

This year’s Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo, themed “Turn Up the Fun at 51,” boasts an impressive roster of performers that will captivate aviation enthusiasts and casual spectators alike. The U.S. Navy Blue Angels, renowned for their precision aerobatics with F/A-18 Super Hornets, headline the event with performances scheduled for April 5 and 6. Joining them are the USAF F-16 Fighting Falcon Demo Team and the F-35A Lightning II Demo Team, showcasing the cutting-edge power of modern military aviation all week long. The U.S. Navy also brings its F-35C Lightning II and EA-18G Growler for dynamic demonstrations, including a Legacy Flight featuring a vintage F4U Corsair.

Civilian performers add flair to the skies, with names like Rob Holland in his MXS-RH, Michael Goulian in an Extra 330SC, and Skip Stewart piloting his Pitts S-2S set to dazzle crowds with jaw-dropping stunts. The Titan Aerobatic Team, flying three T-6 Texans, and the Redline Airshows with their Van’s RV-8 duo will also take flight. Night airshows on Wednesday and Saturday, featuring fireworks, drones, and the Sunset Aerial Circus with STOL aircraft and skydivers armed with pyrotechnics, promise to light up the evenings. The week kicks off with a bang tonight, as country stars Tyler Hubbard (of Florida Georgia Line) and Uncle Kracker perform an opening concert at 6 p.m. on the Warbird Ramp, included with Tuesday admission.

Daily airshows run from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., with schedules posted each morning on Sun ‘n Fun’s social media channels. “This is one of the most diverse lineups we’ve ever had,” said John “Lites” Leenhouts, President of Sun ‘n Fun Fly-In, Inc. “From military precision to civilian creativity, there’s something for everyone.”

Vendors and Attractions Galore

Beyond the aerial spectacle, the expo grounds are alive with over 500 exhibitors showcasing the latest in aviation technology, gear, and services. The vendor area, sprawling across the 1,000-acre Sun ‘n Fun Expo Campus, offers everything from aircraft parts and pilot supplies to aviation-themed apparel and memorabilia. Food vendors are plentiful, with options ranging from classic festival fare like corn on the cob at the Corn Roast to Amish donuts from Peachey’s Bakery—a local favorite. Beer and other beverages will be available for purchase, particularly in the Preferred Airshow Seating Area, which also provides complimentary water, shaded seating, and restrooms for ticket holders.

The event isn’t just for pilots. Families can explore the Junior ACEs youth education area, a new aviation playground, and STEM-focused activities at the Career Fair in the Future ‘n Flight Plaza. The Florida Air Museum, open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., offers a deep dive into aviation history, while flight line tours and workshops cater to enthusiasts of all ages. Saturday morning’s hot air balloon launch, weather permitting, between 6:30 and 8 a.m., adds an extra touch of magic to the week.

Braving the Heat: Sun Protection Tips

With Lakeland’s forecast calling for sunny skies and temperatures peaking near 90°F, heat management is a top priority. Organizers and local experts urge attendees to take precautions. “April in Florida can feel like summer,” said Dr. Emily Carter, a dermatologist with Lakeland Regional Health. “Sunscreen with at least SPF 30, reapplied every two hours, is a must. Wide-brimmed hats and UV-protective clothing can also make a big difference.”

Hydration is key, with free water available in the Preferred Seating Area and numerous vendors selling drinks throughout the grounds. Backpacks are permitted, so attendees are encouraged to bring reusable water bottles—though coolers are restricted to the campground and aircraft camping areas. Light, breathable clothing and portable shade options like blankets (since umbrellas are banned in the Preferred Seating Area) will help combat the heat. For those sensitive to noise, earplugs or noise-canceling headphones are recommended, as the roar of jet engines can amplify the intensity of the day.

Driving to the Show: Tips for a Smooth Ride

Located at 4075 James C. Ray Dr. on the south side of Lakeland Linder International Airport, the annual Sun ‘n Fun airshow draws over 200,000 visitors, making traffic a consideration. Main parking is accessible via 3875 W. Pipkin Rd., with an east entrance on Old Medulla Rd. “Follow the signage for parking—it’s the best way to avoid confusion,” advised Lakeland Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Mark Wilson. Gates Facemasks are optional but recommended at entry points, and trams will shuttle visitors from parking lots to the admission gates.

Gates open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. (extending to 10 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday for night shows). Drivers should plan to arrive early, especially before the daily airport closure from 1 p.m. to approximately 5:30 p.m. during airshows, when arrivals and departures are halted. With heavy traffic expected, particularly on weekend days featuring the Blue Angels, carpooling or arriving before 7 a.m. can help beat the rush. For those flying in, the airport reopens 30-45 minutes after the airshow ends—check the Arrival ATIS on 118.025 for updates.

A Community Celebration

As the primary fundraiser for the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE), Sun ‘n Fun supports STEM education and aviation scholarships, making it more than just an airshow—it’s a community cornerstone. “This event brings people together to celebrate flight and inspire the next generation,” Leenhouts said. With kids 12 and under admitted free and Florida resident BOGO weekend specials, it’s an accessible outing for all.

Whether you’re an aviation buff or just looking for a fun day out, the 51st Sun ‘n Fun Aerospace Expo promises high-octane excitement. So slather on the sunscreen, gas up the car, and head to Lakeland—where the skies are clear, the planes are loud, and the fun is turned up to 51.
