Walt Disney World announced last week plans to repurpose its former $400 million Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser resort hotel into office space for Disney’s “Imagineer” employees. After being open for only 18 months, the hotel was closed on September 2023. Since the closure, Star Wars Fans have speculated that the hotel would still be repurposed into some type of Star Wars related attraction, but last week’s announcement put an end to their hopes.

The Galactic Starcruiser, which opened in March 2022, was designed as a two-night, interactive adventure where guests could live out their Star Wars fantasies aboard a simulated starship. The experience featured character interactions, themed dining, and story-driven activities, all set within a meticulously designed environment. However, despite its innovative concept and hefty price tag—starting at approximately $4,800 for a two-night stay—the 100 room hotel struggled to attract enough guests to justify its operational costs.

In a statement released Tuesday, Disney officials acknowledged the challenges faced by the project. “While the Galactic Starcruiser was a bold and ambitious project that pushed the boundaries of themed entertainment, we have decided to reimagine the space to better align with our current business needs,” said Jeff Vahle, president of Walt Disney World Resort. “This transition will allow us to repurpose the facility to support our growing workforce and operational demands.”

The hotel, located near Disney’s Hollywood Studios, is renovating to convert its guest rooms, dining areas, and interactive spaces into office environments. According to Disney, the renovations began last year. No timeline has yet been announced for the project’s completion.

The announcement has sparked mixed reactions from fans and industry experts. While some praised Disney for its willingness to adapt and innovate, others expressed disappointment over the closure of such a unique and ambitious project. “The Galactic Starcruiser was a one-of-a-kind experience that pushed the boundaries of themed entertainment,” said theme park historian Jim Hill. “It’s sad to see it go, especially given the significant investment, but this move reflects the realities of the current market.”

Disney has not ruled out the possibility of incorporating elements of the Galactic Starcruiser experience into other areas of its parks or future projects. The company continues to invest heavily in its Star Wars offerings, including the popular Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge land at Disney’s Hollywood Studios and Disneyland.

As the Galactic Starcruiser prepares for its next chapter, Disney World guests and employees alike are left to reflect on the hotel’s brief but memorable run. For now, the force will be with the office workers who will soon call this unique, $400 million space their new workplace.

Stay tuned for updates as this story develops.
