A Texas judge has officially signed off and approved a special election to decide if Starbase will be allowed to incorporate as a municipality. Starbase is, of course, the site of SpaceX’s Starship development, manufacturing and launch facilities.
A petition requesting the vote was submitted to the county on Dec. 12, 2024. After review by the Cameron county elections administrator and county commission civil legal division, Judge Eddie Treviño approved the petition and ordered the election. That vote will be held Saturday, May 3, 2025 with early voting April 22 through April 29. If approved, the area will become a Type-C municipality formally called Starbase, Texas.
The county confirmed that the incorporation petition for Starbase, Texas, was properly signed by at least 10% of the area’s eligible voters.
Furthermore, the petition met all legal requirements, providing sufficient evidence that Starbase has the necessary population for incorporation and that the proposed area is not already within the boundaries of another city or town.
Given these conditions, Treviño was obligated under Section 8.009 of the Texas Local Government Code to call for an election.
“If the election passes, this will be the newest town in Cameron County since Los Indios in 1995. We look forward to seeing the outcome of this election,” stated Judge Eddie Treviño, Jr., who signed the order February 12th.
