If you haven’t flown through Tampa International Airport (TPA) lately, you’re in for some exciting changes in 2025. Often hailed as one of Florida’s top airports, TPA today announced a slate of upgrades to make your travel experience even better.
New Shuttles at Airsides A and C
First up, if you’re catching flights from Airsides A or C, get ready to ride in style. The iconic red and blue shuttles, which have been faithfully ferrying passengers since the ’90s, are being replaced. These new shuttles will ditch the old carpet for durable flooring, feature overhead info displays, and keep the classic benches at both ends. Construction crews have been working on one track at a time to keep things running smoothly during the transition.
Red Express Curbsides: A Faster Way In and Out
For those of you traveling light without checked bags, TPA is introducing the Red Express Curbsides, set to open in mid-2025. These curbsides let you skip the ticketing level and head straight to your gate, or, if you’re arriving, bypass the baggage claim and get on your way faster. It’s all about reducing congestion and making your journey as hassle-free as possible.
Expanded TSA Checkpoints at Airsides A and E
Security lines are about to get a lot more manageable. TPA is adding around 20,000 square feet to the TSA checkpoints at Airsides A and E. Once completed, each will boast seven screening lanes, giving you plenty of space to get organized before heading to your gate. Keep an eye out for these improvements as they wrap up this year.
Airside D: The Future is Coming
Looking ahead, Tampa International broke ground on the new Airside D in late 2024. This 16-gate terminal, slated to open in 2028, will accommodate both international and domestic flights. While the anchor airline tenant hasn’t been announced yet, this expansion is a big step toward serving the growing number of travelers passing through Tampa.
New Nonstop Routes
TPA isn’t just upgrading facilities; it’s also expanding your travel options. Starting June 4, Air Canada will offer twice-weekly nonstop flights to Vancouver, British Columbia, marking TPA’s first direct connection to this Canadian city. WestJet follows with weekly flights to Vancouver beginning June 14, running through October 25, 2025. Plus, Delta Air Lines is launching daily nonstop service to Austin, Texas, starting June 8, 2025. More destinations mean more adventures!
Passenger Growth: A Quick Look Back and Forward
TPA has been buzzing with activity. In fiscal year 2024, the airport handled approximately 25.2 million passengers, reflecting the Tampa Bay area’s rapid growth. Looking ahead, projections for fiscal year 2025 estimate around 26 million travelers, a 3.4% increase. By 2037, TPA aims to serve up to 35 million passengers annually, and these upgrades are paving the way for that future.
So, whether you’re a frequent flyer or planning your next getaway, TPA’s enhancements are set to make your travel experience better than ever. Safe travels, and enjoy the new perks coming your way!
