Orlando KIA Center – In traditional pirate fashion, the Savannah Ghost Pirates stole Monday night’s home game against our Orlando Solar Bears 6-5.

For a city where Minor League hockey hasn’t really caught on yet, the Orlando KIA Center had a decent Solar Bear fan turnout for a Monday night! An affiliate of Tampa’s NHL team, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Bears play in North America’s premier “AA” hockey league in the ECHL (East Coast Hockey League).

Coming off two straight away losses to Savannah, the Solar Bears were eager for a win. With 14 shots on goal verses Savannah’s nine, the Bears were the first to put numbers on the board 11:35 into the first period. Six and a half minutes later, the Ghost Pirates evened the score.

Here is where the tide turned to the Pirates favor. For 14 minutes of the 20-minute period, seven Bears – yes, seven – were sent to the penalty box. Many times two players at the same time! This made the Bears easy prey, as the Pirates had several 5-on-3 power plays. Ara Nazarian found the net once for the Solar Bears, but the Pirates lit up the silent light four times making the score 5-2 at the second intermission.

And this is why the Orlando Solar Bears are such an awesome team – they just don’t quit! Coming out of the locker room like a bear out of winter hibernation, these Bears looked hungry! The fans played their part in feeding the Bears as well! Surrendering just one goal to the Ghost Pirates, Djibril Touré and Brayden Low each scored goals. Ara Nazarian’s second goal of the night brought the score to 6-5, where it stayed despite the intense, unceasing attacks on the Pirate’s ship.
