An Evening of Tampa Fun

Going to a sporting event is always fun. I particularly enjoy soccer, though, because I learned how to play in Germany when I was 10 and grew up playing all the way through high school. The Tampa Bay Sun v Dallas Trinity match, however, packed more fun into a single event than I’m sure anyone could have expected!

New League, New Teams!

Sunday evening, in the newly renovated Riverfront Stadium situated along Hillsborough River in Downtown Tampa, the Tampa Bay Sun FC, a newly formed women’s soccer club playing in the brand-new USL Super League, stepped out onto the pitch against the ladies from the equally new Dallas Trinity FC.

The Sun Rose & Set in Tampa!

No one seemed to be bothered by the Tampa heat due to the entertaining music and wonderful smell of food in the air from the many different concession stands! The crowd consisted of over 5000 fans and Tampa dignitaries all there for one reason: To support their city of Tampa Bay and the inaugural match of the Sun.

Evening the Score

The game kicked off at 6:30 PM and Dallas dominated the field, with #2 Hannah Davison scoring the first and only goal of the first half. However, whatever Sun head coach Denise Schilte-Brown said to her players in the locker room, it seemed to light a fire under them. The Sun were much more aggressive and looked like a completely different team in the second half, with #15 Brooke Hendrix bringing the score to an even 1-1.

Net Domination

Though the whole team shone like the sun (I’m sorry. I just had to write that!), it was Tampa’s goalie #28 Ashley Orkus’ non-stop domination at the net that shut down every future attempt from Dallas to add more points to the scoreboard.

Inaugural Tie

Although a win would have been a perfect ending to this story, in my opinion a 1-1 tie was a great ending for both teams to walk away from their very first match. Both teams earn a point, no one goes home a “looser” in their inaugural opening.
