A Lot of Tourism and Movie History Here
Silver Springs in Florida has been a tourist destination since the 1820s, when adventurous travelers would pole their way up the Ocklawaha River to the Silver River. In the late 1870s, glass-bottom boats were invented and tours of the springs began. In the 1920s, W. Carl Ray and W.M. “Shorty” Davidson developed the land around the Silver River’s headwaters into an attraction that became Silver Springs Nature Theme Park. Ray and Davidson added a jungle cruise, a replica Native American Village, the Prince of Peace art installation, and Tommy Bartlett’s Deer Ranch in the 1930s and 1950s.
Silver Springs has also been a filming location, first in 1916 and frequently in the 1930s and 1950s for the Tarzan film series. In the 1950s, Bruce Moser’s underwater photography helped bring in many visitors to the park.
Discovered by Hollywood in the 1930’s, scenes from at least 20 movies were filmed here, including Rebel Without a Cause starring James Dean, Distant Drums starring Gary Cooper, the James Bond movie Moonraker, Creature from the Black Lagoon, and six Tarzan flicks.
