This past weekend, the 15th Annual Thunder on Cocoa Beach powerboat racing event roared into action from May 17-19, drawing in massive crowds and delivering high-octane thrills. Known for its intense racing and scenic Atlantic backdrop, this year’s event did not disappoint.

The festivities kicked off on Thursday with a High Octane Kick-Off Party, setting the stage for an action-packed weekend. The parade of powerboats down A1A on Friday was a crowd favorite, culminating in a lively block party in downtown Cocoa Beach where fans could meet the racers and admire the boats up close.

Saturday and Sunday were dedicated to the main races, featuring over 60 teams competing across various classes. The premier Class 1 boats, equipped with twin inboard 1100 horsepower engines, reached speeds up to 175 mph, providing a spectacular show for the fans. The best viewing spots were between Shepard Park and Coconuts on the Beach, where spectators enjoyed unobstructed views of the thrilling races.

This year’s event introduced an upgraded VIP experience, offering exclusive seating, enhanced dining options, and dedicated services right at the start/finish line at Lori Wilson Park. Options ranged from two-person loungers with umbrellas to private cabanas, each designed to provide comfort and an immersive race day experience. The VIP Chalet was particularly notable, offering live race broadcasts, complimentary buffets, and shaded seating areas.

Thunder on Cocoa Beach is not just about racing; it’s a social event for the Space Coast. With high-speed action complemented by various social activities, it continues to attract both racing enthusiasts and tourists. The event also supports charitable causes, with proceeds benefiting organizations like I Am a Freedom Fighter, which aids in the fight against human trafficking.

The economic impact of the event is substantial, generating an estimated $12 million for the local economy last year. This year’s turnout and enthusiastic participation suggest a similar boost, reinforcing Cocoa Beach’s status as a premier destination for both racing teams and fans.

Overall, Thunder on Cocoa Beach 2024 was a spectacular success, blending the excitement of offshore powerboat racing with vibrant community activities, making it a must-attend event on the racing calendar.
